Joker
Portrait of Heath Ledger as the Joker from Dark Knight. It’s a fantastic movie, just shy of perfect, and his portrayal was magnificent. I don’t think I’ve seen a more clear representation of that character. I really like how this painting turned out, with all the funky textures and stark lighting. I went through some…

Homelander
A portrait of Homelander from The Boys, sneering. The actor, Anthony Starr, does a remarkable job showing us the internal anger that seethes within the character. I figured a cartoon-style rendering made sense, but the suit wouldn’t “read” without some of the minute texture detail on it. I hope my solution works.

Curves
Another painting of /u/the_tired_hippie for /r/DrawMeNSFW. She makes some really terrific poses for me to learn. My painting in Procreate continues to improve. I’d say the roughest part of this is managing the outline/paint boundary. You can see that some of it is soft and some hard-edged. I’ll have to work something out there. Process…

Up for anything
Painting of Reddit user /u/mommy_time for /r/DrawMeNSFW. The detail in the original pose made me want to do this as a full painting. The detail work was too important for a cartoon-style rendering. For the first time with a full painting in Procreate, I am happy with the color work in this. I think I’m…

The Tired Hippie
This is a painted portrait of Reddit user /u/the_tired_hippie for /r/DrawMeNSFW. It’s a great pose! I accidentally merged the sketch and paint layers, so there’s some really crude linework around the edges. I think it turned out all right, though. Clearly, I’m still trying to get a handle on the blender tool in Procreate.

Nextlander
I made a silly thing to celebrate the launch of Nextlander, a video game… uh… podcast, streaming, personality… thing. Three of the core guys from Giant Bomb left to make their own thing, and I love it. The picture is modeled after the original movie poster for Star Trek: the Motion Picture.

Birthday girl
I woke up in the middle of the night with this notion about birthdays in my head and knew I had to make a painting for it. It’s my best friend Dani’s birthday, something neither of us tends to be very happy about. I’m glad I can celebrate her, though. Happy birthday, Dani! I’m really…

Sohla El-Waylly
Another cartoon-style portrait, this time of my favorite YouTube chef, Sohla El-Waylly. I’m pretty happy with this one. Check out that brick texture! I figured out a little trick to represent the albedo on her glasses that sure wouldn’t work in a physical painting. I’m debating whether I should have simplified the shadows some, but…

Breathy
From a particularly sensual video of Aftyn‘s, I picked out three really breathtaking shots and composed them together into this tiered triptych. It’s in a hybrid style, with hard lines and soft colors. I like the warmth of the piece overall, and I think her hair turned out pretty good.

Jareth, the goblin king
An attempt to make a simplified version of Jareth, the Goblin King from Labyrinth. I think David Bowie is one of the best entertainers to ever live, so it was a real treat to do this. It didn’t turn out as good as I hoped. Blonde hair continue to be problematic for me. The line…

Dental hygienist
This was a very quick sketch of one of Aftyn‘s ahegao moments, during her dental hygienist role play. This is one of my rare pencil and paper pieces. Quite the throwback!
-
Teacher
Aftyn‘s teacher roleplay was the first thing I ever saw of her. This is an attempt at doing a much more graphical style than I usually do, a product of looking for ways to work around my troubles with the Procreate blend tool. My line work is definitely improving. I’ve been saying I needed to…

Silly girl
This is a silly portrait of an occasionally very silly girl. It was painted with just the basic round brush, although I allowed myself to use the blend tool this time to soften the pigment patches. Quick and messy, and really just a way of experimenting with trying to eyeball colors and light placement. Valuable…
-
Ear massage
I went looking through Aftyn‘s videos for moments that would work well in a vertical orientation to make a phone backdrop. This is from the one titled Ear massage and eye contact. I really like the way the lighting turned out here. This was the first time I did a spotting pass near the end…

Pink sweater
There is such warmth to the video this originates in, I couldn’t help but do a picture from it. This is my first portrait where I chose to hide the outline layer I started with, which gives it a more painterly look overall. The soft focus depth of field comes through in an interesting way.…

Supernatural
Portrait of Aftyn as Twin supernatural babes. This is my first color portrait that I think is actually pretty good. Doing this picture, I found the painting style that worked for me in Krita. Every time I tried to use a brush with less than 100% opacity, any regions of overlap between strokes would leave…

Fun with the tongue
Portrait of Aftyn Rose from Fun with the tongue. My first ever color portrait, painted in Krita. My line work here is still quite crude, and it clearly exhibits some of the problems that would continue to haunt me — shadow color and hair depth.
-
Dangerous succubus
My second “pencil” portrait of Aftyn Rose, from the Dangerous succubus cosplay. I felt a little more in control of the pencil tools at this point. While doing this, I was thinking consciously about how to get viewers to enter the picture through the eyes, and I think it worked. I tried a color version…
-
Hypnosis
My first portrait done in Krita, made with a combination of pencil and charcoal tools. You can see in places where I struggle with how those tools apply color. Maybe it’s a matter of not holding the stylus with steady pressure, but the shade work is a mess. This was also my first portrait of…

Rustonomicon
A friend just pointed me to The Rustonomicon, a guide to the down and dirty details of working in “unsafe” Rust code. It looks fascinating, and for a systems guy like me, right up my alley. I’m looking forward to working through it.
