Charcoal portrait of actress Anna Kendrick, done in Procreate on the iPad. I tried doing the sketch layers in charcoal this time, and while I think they are not disasters, I didn’t like it as the clean lines you get from pencil or ink sketches. I was trying to eyeball colors at first, and it wasn’t really working. I didn’t have confidence in my choices so I was being too timid with the application. I haven’t had much as much success with that in charcoal as I did with paint — something I’ll need to keep working at.
If you watch the process video, you’ll see that my sketch was an utter failure around her mouth. It kept me from wanting to work on it for the longest time, and was a struggle throughout. I’ve never had to draw that much tooth! It ended up looking okay, but mouths continue to be an area I need practice.
