This week the Love Life Drawing study group assignment was to make a variety of kinds of edges. Combinations of fine and wide lines, hard and soft edges, high and low contrast. On the left side, I sketched some more simplified rib cage volumes. On the right side, I tried my hand at replicating the marks from another page of David Mazzuchelli’s Asterios Polyp. I am obviously not the master of control or design Mazzuchelli is, but I think the page looks pretty good.
I’ll include the original page here. It’s almost the thesis statement of the book’s art style. What if every character looks like their inner self? I found the scribble styles hardest to replicate, particularly that guy made of cursive words on lined paper.
