Still life painting of a red apple

Marek, the new instructor at Love Life Drawing, keeps linking to fascinating YouTube painting tutorials, and I’m inspired to try my hand working through them. This one, from Ahmed Aldori, was especially impressive for walking through techniques I did not have my head around in terms of brush strokes, simplification, and impression.

I like the look of this apple! I could like it more, but in terms of making a painterly style still life representation, I am quite pleased. It was very much a digital painting tutorial, so it gave great guidance to techniques I will actually be using going forward, such as making a new layer, painting a big, bold mark, then erasing down with the same brush to shape and blend it. I’m not as excited about the impact blending had on the image. That could be a matter of the brush I used, or maybe it just doesn’t sit as well with me. I am really happy I did this! I will practice this more!
