This is a quick shapes-only portrait of singer Eugene Hütz, Ukrainian frontman of “gypsy punk” band Gogol Bordello. The reference photo was taken from the same concert (and by the same photographer!) as the Regina Spektor shot I painted a few weeks ago. I’ve been following that band for ages — I just adore them! Such high energy, positive music! If you’re not familiar, maybe give this song a try.
Like the last painting, this was done without making any kind of sketch up ahead. I started with making some broad shapes of value and massaged/carved them until things looked right. The whole thing only took like an hour! It’s messy and I probably wouldn’t accept this level of exactitude with some subjects, but I’m surprised how happy I am with the results.
