This week in the Love Life Drawing study group, the exercise is to use shading to indicate anatomical features on some gesture drawings. I would say that by and large I did not succeed at that. That guy in the bottom right has some good midriff area, and calling out those little divots above the butt where the pelvis line crosses is okay. But the rest? Sloppy. Deltoids and shoulder blades are largely unreadable; my shading — contour or otherwise — is a mess.
Gesture drawings are supposed to be fast and loose, spirit over accuracy. But when we’re trying to add in anatomy, it goes into a different category for me, looking for that accuracy. Fast and accurate don’t go together for me. These took almost as long as the gesture drawings I do, but are somehow much worse. And that doesn’t even acknowledge that those ink contour guys basically ARE figure drawings.
So, disappointing all around.
