This week the Love Life Drawing study group returns to the figure studies from last week, adding in a sense of “draw the verb” energy to the drawings. Does that sound vague to you? It felt that way to me! The instructions suggest we’re bringing together gesture, anatomy, and form with a big dose of intuition about how to capture the “actions” a figure is doing. He suggests these verbs are not merely the high level action — dancing, changing a light bulb, or what have you. He says it should include things like pressing back against gravity, or flexing a muscle.
In addition to that, Kenzo made a point about counter-balancing edge lines. Straights against curves, or curves that feed into an opposing curve on the opposite side. I was able to get my head around that better than the verbs thing, and feel pretty good about the lines in this set.
In fact, I’m content with the quality of everything this time around. The figures look solid. The shading is pretty good. The faces don’t look monstrous. There’s pretty good flow through the figures, especially the limbs.
Ok, well, most of the faces are decent at least.
