Sundogs

Painting of the sundogs atmospheric phenomenon, done in Procreate on iPad. The reference for this image was a photo taken by a friend of mine in Washington. It’s a lovely photo. I don’t think the painting does it justice exactly, but it’s hard to put my finger on why. It just looks a little rough to me. You have to love, when you get away from the city light pollution, how many stars you can see in the sky. It was visiting out there, laying back on a mountaintop to watch a meteor shower, that I first ever saw the substance of the Milky Way.

Sundogs form because of ice crystals in the cloud layer, refracting the sunlight at a radius of 22 degrees. They usually appear white but can take on a rainbow hue as these do.
