Figure study work continues apace. I did more of these as sketches this week than paintings. I’m working on trying to express different values with simple ink marks. You can see a few different techniques at work in this piece. Most of it is decent, although I don’t think I communicated the lighting on his chest very well. I’m improving with the cross-contour lines, although I would need to go slower to really sell them.

The sloppier I let the inks go, the less I think they work. Reducing to 3 values was more successful on this piece than earlier work.

I like the flowing shadow on this guy, even if it doesn’t jibe with the sketchy nature of the rest of it. I dig the facial shape.

My intention here was to reduce myself to 2 values and then I chickened out and added some hatching. But this might be my best simplification yet. My reduced faces are finally starting to look like faces.
Oh, did I say I was getting better at faces? Maybe not…
