Heads up

I was a little disappointed by the quality of my faces in the study group heads month concentration. The structural foundation is solid, and I’m sure it will help with gesture drawing, but in terms of building to portraits, most of my drawings were unrecognizable, except for the Aftyn ones.

I decided to keep practicing at it. I want to keep doing sheets like this with small but high quality portrait renders. These are all drawn from reference, of course.

As always, I’ve chosen these people because I admire them. Starting at the top left they are:

1. Zachary Quinto as Spock - I’m doing all the Spocks, with the goal that you’ll be able to distinguish between them
2. Christina Hendricks as Joan Harris (Mad Men)
3. Brittany Murphy - Taken from us too soon
4. Philip Seymour Hoffman - Taken from us too soon
5. Michelle Monaghan - I don’t understand why she doesn’t get more work
6. Aftyn Rose - My favorite subject
7. David Bowie - For my money, the world’s best entertainer
8. Mahershala Ali - I mean, you saw Moonlight, right?

I enjoyed doing these. It’s definitely a challenge working on such a small scale, but I think most of these are recognizable as their subjects. I used the Kenzo head structure as a basis for each, and built up the details on top of it. I haven’t settled on a consistent rendering style yet, though. I’ll need to keep working at that.
