Once upon a time, I painted a portrait of Veep star Anna Chlumsky, and it was… not very good. One of the few that has diminished in my estimation as time goes by. Over the intervening years, it has been a consistent eyesore when scrolling through my portfolio. I decided I needed to revisit her as a subject and see if my skills have progressed enough to do her justice.
What do you think? I’m pretty happy with the look of this one, even if it doesn’t necessarily nail her likeness. This is a shapes-first painting using one of Procreate’s new brush tools called “She Oak”. It’s a chunky, opinionated brush with pressure-based size and opacity. That’s usually a bad combination for me, although I think I got to a nice place. I allowed myself a bit of blending to soften some unintended edges. I struggled the most with the shapes of her hand and the folds in her blouse.
