Painting of Henry Rollins, done in Artstudio Pro on the iPad. I bumped into an incredible photo of him by a photographer named Mick Hutson and just had to paint him. I love the dynamism and life in that photo, and I’m hoping I managed to capture it in the painting. Sadly, Mr Hutson died about a year and a half ago, so I won’t have a chance to show it to him.
Painting this is me getting off track on both figure studies and practicing hair. I don’t know — sometimes I just want to paint for fun, you know? Make a cool-looking thing.
If you’re not familiar with Rollins, he’s worth looking up! In addition to being the front man for Black Flag and Rollins Band, he’s also an actor, writer, and public speaker. Most of his acting roles are pretty small, but check out his starring turn in He Never Died. And if you haven’t heard him tell a story on one of his speaking tours, you’ve missed out.
