I have admired Margot Kidder since I first saw her in Richard Donner’s Superman. I don’t think I saw it in the theater, so I’m guessing I probably saw it on TV in 1981-ish. She is still the model of Lois Lane in my mind. Kidder makes Lane into a true equal to Superman’s paragon among men. She wasn’t just sharp and funny. Even at my young age, I could see she was bringing a sexuality to the character the comics would never face. She was open about wanting Superman, a woman whose expression of will in the world did not stop at the professional level. Let’s call it a formative experience for my young self.
Somewhere along the line I learned Kidder had done some modeling, including a spread for Playboy Magazine. This charcoal rendering is based on a photo from that set, one that is both a little cheeky and a lot sexy. She has sadly passed from this Earth after burning a brilliant streak through our skies. She was amazing. I only hope my little drawing does her some justice.
