Study group - hips & glutes 4

4 pencil shaded figure sketches. 2 of figures facing away from us, and 2 facing toward us

This week we extend our learning of hips & glutes anatomy to anchor some figure drawings. I’m generally pretty happy with the results, even if the shading gives them all a kind of metallic look. I don’t fully have the swing of terminator lines yet, but they’re not terrible.

What I’m happy with is my ability to represent the shape of the hips and thighs now. I think I’ve gotten more out of this unit than any of the previous anatomy lessons. I’m hoping that means things are finally starting to sink into this thick skull of mine. Or it could just be a result of doing the work with a bit more intent.

In the background, I continue to work on drawing figures from imagination. That process is going slowly, but I am getting some usable results. Generally when those drawings succeed, I find it is because I have rooted them in the hips. Much of my early focus was on rib cages, but something about the hips has unlocked an important door for me.
