Study group - imagination 1

This month, the Love Life Drawing study group goes after the one thing that brings everyone anxiety: drawing from imagination. In the first week’s exercise, we were to draw a figure from reference, then hide both the drawing and reference and draw it again from memory. Ideally we were to pay attention to how the figure was constructed anatomically, so as to be able to build it back up from scratch. Where was the light coming from? How would that affect the teres major or deltoid?

The final step was to compare the two drawings and give a critical appraisal of how you fared. Most of my analysis is written onto the image, but I’ll also add that I didn’t once consider the interactions of light and anatomy for guiding the shadow shapes. I was trying to memorize the shapes, and you can see places where that failed in ways that make the figure unbelievable. The from memory guy is boring and false looking. I have a long way to go.
