Hair test 1

4 small monochrome portraits focused on showing shapes in hair

I saw a post on Cara from the artist called Mucie that looked, if I could understand and master the techniques, would teach me how to beat my great enemy: hair. I asked for advice and what she said was to treat hair the same way you do any other subject, focus first on big shapes, then find some medium shapes within that, and then find some small ones within those.

The advice connected back with some things I’ve been trying to learn (and what caused me to drop out of the Love Life Drawing study group). This time around I felt a bit more receptive to it.

For these drawings, I focused first on finding the big shapes in the faces and hair. Then I made a few subdivisions within those. And then when that felt pretty good, using a detail brush to pick out some fine details.

I think it’s an improvement, but I still need a lot of work in this territory.
