Stephen Travers’ eagle

Ink drawing of an eagle statue

This is a study exercise prompted by the Stephen Travers video below. He was trying to teach people how to approach ink-based shading. Hatching, cross-hatching, creating forms, and giving the “effect of detail” without drawing out all the individual detail. Above it all, approaching the shading with intentionality. How do the marks communication the forms, the shadows, and the local colors?

Most of what you would call the complicated parts of this drawing were provided for me. Stephen did the outline of the eagle; I just did the shading. He provided these two images as a basis to work from. I’m pretty happy with my results, although it took me longer to get into the “intentionality” groove than I’m sure Mr Travers would want. But that’s why we practice!

His version is, of course, much more pleasing to the eye. I’ll need to think about that.
